Gap Filling of Conjunctions

Conjunctions are for connecting thoughts, actions, and ideas as well as nouns, clauses, and other parts of speech. For example: Mary went to the supermarket and bought oranges. Conjunctions are useful for making lists. For example: We made pancakes, eggs, and coffee for breakfast.

A) Coordinating Conjunction: they join together sentences or clauses that are of equal importance. Some coordinating conjunctions and, but, for, or, still, yet, so, otherwise, nor, neither, either, as well as, etc.

  • Many men and women came to see the fair.
  • I wrote to him, but he did not reply.
  • B) Subordinating Conjunctions : they display the relationships of Time or Place. They also show a relationship between two clauses involving a transition of time or place. Some examples of such subordinating conjunctions are once, while, when, whenever, where, wherever, before, and after.

  • I know the place where he was born.
  • Strike the iron while it is hot. 
  • It is a month since he went away.
  • I shall stay here till/until you come.
  • C) Correlative conjunctions are pairs of conjunctions that work together. Some examples are either/or, neither/nor, and not only/but also.

  • He is not only rich but also clever.
  • He as well as his parents it illiterate.
  • Either he or his brother did it.
  • D) An Adversative conjunction expresses opposition or contrast between two statements. Examples are: but, still, yet, whereas, while, nevertheless etc
